How To Scan From Photoshop

I initially wrote this post in July 2010. I've added updated information to information technology a couple of times, the most contempo one about Photoshop CC and OSX x.ten.five Yosemite.

I've ever preferred doing my scanning from within Photoshop, since it offers a fuller range of control than virtually scanner software. It patently interprets the RGB data extremely well. After turning on the scanner, launch Photoshop and scroll down the FILE bill of fare to IMPORT, where yous will run across either the TWAIN selection or the actual name of your scanner. That's your ticket to scanning success.

In 2010, when I upgraded to from CS3 to CS5 and Snowfall Leopard, I was no longer able to browse from within Photoshop. At beginning, I thought Adobe had simply moved the carte particular to some other spot, but quickly realized that information technology simply wasn't there any longer. I was able to use the scanner software hands plenty, and the scan was moderately expert quality. Yet, I was still dissatisfied, so I did some research and discovered a few interesting things, which solved the problem:

CS6-5-4-twain

  1. Brand sure you accept the latest version of the TWAIN-compliant scanner driver and software. The manufacturer volition often provide downloadable files for free on their websites.
Without the current driver, curious things may happen: I was unable to run into the preview in CS6 until I installed the newest driver.
  2. On some discussion boards, people mentioned that CS5 cannot handle 64-bit scanning settings. To solve this, find the Photoshop CS5 file icon, Get Info (Command-I or FILE  > GET INFO), and select "Open up in 32-bit mode". It's important that you do this, because Adobe CS5 does not support 64-bit TWAIN scanners in either 64-bit or 32-bit Photoshop, and says "use at your own risk". CS6 simply runs in 64-flake mode: if your scanner commuter can't handle 64-bit style, y'all may not be able to apply TWAIN. My Canon PIXMA does work well in both modes, so I am fortunate.
  3. CS6 does not install several legacy (pre-CS4) plug-ins, extensions, and presets, including TWAIN. You can download the optional TWAIN plug-in at the Adobe website, for Windows or  Mac Os. The CS6 plug-in supports 64-bit, while the CS5 plug-in supports 32-scrap, on both Windows and Mac OS platforms, as well as 64-bit using Mac OS 10.6. For CS6, I placed the TWAIN.plugin file within my Photoshop Plug-ins folder. For CS5, I placed the "32bit_only" binder (which contains TWAIN and other goodies) within my Photoshop Plug-ins binder. Then I restarted Photoshop. Voila! Problem solved!
  4. When upgrading to Yosemite, further steps must exist taken. The TWAIN plug-in is not recognized in Photoshop until you install the TWAINBridge awarding. If possible, save TWAINBridge.app from your Mavericks system folder before you upgrade to Yosemite. Information technology's located in /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/. If you've already upgraded to Yosemite earlier saving the app, you can get to Jan Egil'due south web log and download a script he wrote that will install it for you:

    * As in item #1 above, remember to install the latest scanner drivers and software uniform with the new Yosemite OSX. You may demand to restart your computer later on installation.

Windows Limitation

Note that TWAIN is available on the Windows platform only in 32-fleck mode:

Windows

In Windows, the Photoshop TWAIN plug-in can exist used if you run Photoshop CS6 in 32-chip mode. TWAIN is non supported in Photoshop when it's run in 64-bit way. If y'all need a scanning solution when you run Photoshop CS6 in 64-bit manner, use the WIA (Windows Epitome Acquisition) interface for your device, if information technology's available. WIA is also available for use when running Photoshop in 32-chip mode. Contact your scanner manufacturer for more information.

After putting the TWAIN plug-in inside your Photoshop plug-ins folder, open Photoshop the usual way, merely in 32-bit mode.

Photoshop CC for Mac Users

Everything continued to work the same when I upgraded to Photoshop CC 2015. Later on vi months, withal, I did a routine update to Photoshop CC 2015. 5 , and the TWAIN plug-in stopped working. I went through all of the steps outlined above, reinstalling the TWAIN app and plug-in, to no avail. Photoshop simply quits.

New Scanning Method

I searched the forums looking for an answer and discovered that TWAIN is on its way out (no kidding). The ImageKit framework is the new standard. I plant an alternating solution using Epitome Capture, which comes packaged with electric current OSX versions, is costless, and operates on ImageKit. The cardinal change is selecting "Images from Device" when importing.

Original Method: File > Import > TWAIN or proper name of your scanner
New Method: File > Import > Images from Device

This will launch Paradigm Capture. I configured it to create a new Photoshop document, thus loading the scanned image directly into Photoshop. That'south my ultimate goal, so I'yard happy. There are a number of options to choose from:

• Color, blackness & white, text • Resolution • Size • Rotation
• Auto or manual select • Name of file • Format • Image Correction
